Keynotes

Ilmar Ferreira Santos

Biography

Professor Ilmar Ferreira Santos is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He earned his Dr.-Ing. degree from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, in 1993, his Livre-Docência (habilitation) from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, in 1997, and his Dr. Techn. degree from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU)  in 2010.

With more than three decades of experience, Professor Santos has made significant contributions to the fields of multi-physics modeling, design optimization, and control of electro-mechanical machine elements. His research spans rotordynamics, tribology, machine dynamics, intelligent machine elements, and mechatronic control systems, with a particular focus on the integration of advanced sensing, actuation, and control technologies into high-performance rotating machinery. At DTU, he has played a leading role in the development of state-of-the-art experimental facilities for the testing and validation of novel electro-mechanical machine components, including active magnetic bearings and actively controlled fluid-film bearings. These technologies are applied to in-situ machine diagnostics, condition monitoring, performance optimization, and active vibration control in advanced industrial machinery.

Professor Santos has received several prestigious awards recognizing his contributions to innovation, research, education, and professional service. In 1995, he was recognized with the “Top 10 Best Brazilian Patents of the Year” award for the invention of a tilting-pad bearing with an active oil film. In 2010, he received the STATOIL Prize in Denmark for technological achievements in mechatronics applied to machine elements. His commitment to engineering education was acknowledged in 2012 when he was named DTU Lecturer of the Year for his outstanding teaching in Dynamics of Machines. In recognition of more than two decades of service to the engineering community, he received the ASME IGTI Outstanding Service Award in South Korea in 2016. Professor Santos maintains strong and longstanding collaborations with leading industrial companies, research institutions, and universities throughout Europe and South America. His work continues to advance the understanding and application of intelligent machine elements for more efficient, reliable, and sustainable engineering systems.

Accomodation

How to get to Rijeka

By Car

From Italy & Slovenia: Take the A7 via Pasjak or Rupa (~1h 15m from Trieste, ~1h 45m from Ljubljana). Note that Slovenian and Austrian motorways require a vignette, while Croatian tolls accept cash or credit cards. From Central/Eastern Europe (via Zagreb): Take the A6 freeway. From Istria: Take the A8 highway through the Učka Tunnel.

Key Parking: Facilities like Zagrad, Stari Grad, and Ciottina are within walking distance of central venues.

By Plane

While Rijeka Airport (RJK) on Krk Island is the closest (~27 km away) and offers seasonal flights with a shuttle bus to downtown, most international travellers use larger nearby hubs:

Trieste Airport (TRS, Italy): ~110 km away. Accessible to Rijeka via rental car through Slovenia or daily intercity buses (FlixBus, Arriva). Ideal for European low-cost/full-service airlines.

Zagreb Airport (ZAG): ~170 km away. Connected by a straight A6 motorway drive or airport shuttle buses to Zagreb’s central station for frequent onwards buses to Rijeka. Ideal for long-haul/international fliers.
