Conference travel guide — June 6–11, 2027
Rijeka sits on the northern Croatian Adriatic coast and is easily reachable by car or via nearby international airports.

By Car
Traveling to Rijeka by car offers scenic routes and maximum flexibility during your stay.
The city connects directly to the European motorway network:
• From Italy & Slovenia: Follow the A7 motorway, crossing the border at Pasjak or Rupa (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Trieste, and 1 hour 45 minutes from Ljubljana).
• From Central/Eastern Europe (via Zagreb): Take the A6 motorway (the Rijeka–Zagreb motorway), which links directly to the A1 network toward the capital.
• From Istria: Reach the city via the A8 motorway through the Učka Tunnel.

Parking & Tolls
Croatian motorways use a distance-based toll system, payable by cash or credit card. If driving through Slovenia or Austria, purchase a vignette before entering their motorway network. Rijeka has several central parking garages (e.g., Zagrad, Stari Grad, Ciottina) within walking distance of major venues and hotels.
Note for June 2027:
Roadworks are currently underway on the A7 (Matulji–Opatija junction) and the A8 near the Učka Tunnel, where a second tube opened in September 2024 and connecting works are ongoing. Allow a little extra time on these stretches, and check live traffic before you travel.

By Plane
The conference runs June 6–11, 2027, at the start of the summer season. While Rijeka Airport (RJK) on the island of Krk operates seasonal flights, most international attendees find better connections and more frequent options by flying into nearby hub airports.
1. Trieste Airport, Italy (TRS)
• Distance to Rijeka: ~110 km (approx. 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes by car)
• Best for: Attendees flying with European full-service carriers or low-cost airlines (e.g., Ryanair).
• Connecting to Rijeka:
• Rental Car: Fast and straightforward via Slovenia (Pasjak/Rupa border crossing).
• Bus / Shuttle: Direct intercity buses (FlixBus, Arriva) run daily between Trieste / the airport area and Rijeka Bus Station (Žabica).
2. Zagreb Airport, Croatia (ZAG)
• Distance to Rijeka: ~170 km (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes by car via motorway)
• Best for: Attendees on long-haul or international flights connecting through major European hubs (Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Munich).
• Connecting to Rijeka:
• Rental Car: An easy, direct drive along the A6 motorway.
• Direct Bus: Frequent daily buses run from Zagreb Central Bus Station to Rijeka; airport shuttles transfer passengers from the terminal to the central bus station.
3. Alternative Nearby Airport: Rijeka Airport (RJK)
• Distance to Rijeka: ~27 km (on Krk Island, connected to the mainland by bridge)
• Best for: Attendees arriving via European seasonal direct flights. An airport shuttle aligns with flight arrivals and brings passengers directly to downtown Rijeka (Jelačićev trg).

Travel Tips for June 2027
• Early Summer Traffic: Early June brings pleasant weather, but coastal traffic can increase toward weekends. Allow extra time for possible queues near the former border-crossing points and around Opatija/Rijeka, where roadworks are in progress.
• Passports & Visas: Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy are all part of the Schengen Area, ensuring seamless road travel across borders without regular border checks (though occasional temporary checks can occur).
