The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Rijeka last week hosted the presentation of the KLIMAP and STRIVER projects, both dedicated to developing solutions for the rising impacts of climate change. By leveraging advanced scientific research, computer modeling, and artificial intelligence, these initiatives will enable more effective water resource management and reduce the risks of floods, droughts, and other hydrological challenges.

KLIMAP Project
With a budget exceeding €550,000, the KLIMAP project focuses on developing digital tools for managing waterways, water supply systems, and coastal areas. The initiative will yield at least nine concrete climate change adaptation measures specifically tailored for the Primorje-Gorski Kotar and Istria counties, as well as the City of Split.

STRIVER Project
The STRIVER project is a €1.3 million international initiative funded through the Interreg programme Slovenia – Croatia. Within this project, led by the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka, Croatian and Slovenian partners will collaborate to develop prevention and rapid-response systems for floods and droughts in border regions.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Lado Kranjčević, emphasized that these projects bridge the gap between scientific excellence and community needs, providing vital tools for proactive planning and the protection of citizens, infrastructure, and the environment. Beyond scientific innovation, both projects also include training professionals in civil protection, spatial planning, and water management. Furthermore, the models developed here are designed to be applicable to other European regions facing similar climate challenges.
